I. Introduction

A.   Preface

Congratulations on owning ViewPlus IVEO Creator and Converter! IVEO technology is used to create, distribute, and display Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) graphical information so it is usable by all people.  The Creator and Converter applications permit a user to create some simple graphical information, but their major power is their ability to import and internally organize information from virtually any source to assure maximum usability by all.

IVEO Creator and the IVEO Viewer, available free from http://www.ViewPlus.com, have standard visual displays that sighted Windows users will find easy and intuitive to use.  A special full screen uncluttered 'Accessibility View' may be selected by people who are blind or who have other severe print impairments.  IVEO Creator and Viewer permit text and object labels and descriptions to be spoken when selected.  A ViewPlus IVEO Touchpad and access to a ViewPlus embosser are necessary to enable good IVEO audio, Braille, and tactile access to information by people with severe print disabilities.  The tactile image created by the ViewPlus embosser permits people to feel text or images, and the IVEO Touchpad, on which that tactile image is clamped, is a mouse that then may be clicked by the user to select and voice text and object information.

IVEO Converter is a utility that permits Windows applications to create a well-structured SVG file with excellent image and text fidelity.  When opened in IVEO Creator, text labels are recognized and automatically organized into parts that are intuitively readable in audio.  Creator users can add labels and descriptions to graphical objects, assuring that the information is easily usable by all people.  This organization information is introduced into the electronic file but is not visible on the image.  Creator can also import bit-map images and scan in images from paper.  Text in such images is recognized by Optical Character Recognition (OCR).  Creator users may create invisible overlay objects to label and describe important portions of bit-maps so that access to bit-map information by people with print disabilities can be comparable to vector graphic accessibility.

Some Creator features require mouse manipulation that only a sighted person can do, but most features are usable by people who are blind or have other print disabilities.

With IVEO Creator and Converter one can:
  1. Develop fully-accessible interactive materials such as simple talking maps, charts and diagrams in the IVEO SVG format.
  2. Convert files of many Windows applications including MS Office, Adobe Illustrator, and CorelDraw, into IVEO SVG.
  3. Convert PDF into IVEO SVG
  4. Convert graphical information scanned from paper documents to IVEO SVG
  5. Scale documents to any size independently
  6. Read any of these documents visually, in audio, and/or in Braille.

II. IVEO Creator Command Overview

A.   File Menu

  • New (Ctrl+N): Opens a new file.
  • Open (Ctrl+O): Opens up a dialog box allowing the user to choose what SVG file to open.
  • Reload (Ctrl+L): Reopens the current file.
  • Open from barcode (Ctrl+B): Allows the user to open a file by placing a page embossed from IVEO Creator or Viewer onto the Touchpad and pressing the three points along the top edge of the page when directed.  Bar code and index callback works on files printed on that same computer.  If the files and the bar code library file in which the printout parameters are recorded are all copied to another computer, call back will work on the second computer also.
  • Open from index (Ctrl+I): Allows a user to open a file by typing in the index number embossed in Braille on a page by a ViewPlus embosser.
  • Import (no hot key): Allows the user to import bit-map files into IVEO Creator and run them through the optical character recognition engine in one step.
  • Scan (no hot key): Allows the user to scan images directly into IVEO using any scanner installed on the user's system.  Text OCR is done automatically.
  • Save (Ctrl+S): Saves a file under the same name and file type it currently has.
  • Save As (Ctrl+A): Saves a file.  A new name and/or file type can be chosen using this command.
  • Page Setup (no hot key): Allows the user to select printing options, including the page width and height, portrait or landscape print mode, vertical and horizontal margins.  The Print Frame option permits fiducial frame corners as well as tactile bar code and index information to be added by ViewPlus embossers.
  • Print (Ctrl+P): Prints or embosses the current file.
  • Recent (no hot key): Opens a drop down menu listing recent files in chronological order.   One may be opened by clicking it.
  • Preferences (no hot key): Allows the user to change pointer size, toggle the print text as pattern option on and off, and change zoom and pan command step sizes.  Users can choose different menu and screen views.  The Windows file dialogue option, fixed screen mode and the 'Accessibility View' is recommended for people with severe print disabilities. The font parameters for the status bar may be changed, and people using self-voicing can choose not to self-voice the print dialog - which is automatically spoken by screen readers.
    • Exit (Alt+F4): Closes the Creator.

    B.   Edit Menu

    • Undo - Allows user to undo previous action.  This useful tool lists the name of the action just taken, so the user can determine what will be changed.
    • Redo - If the user edits with the undo and wants to return to the previous view, clicking on this function will go back to the previous view.
    • Edit Object (Alt+Enter): Allows the user to edit the currently-selected object's attributes, including the title and description text fields. The text in the title field is read by the program when the object is selected. The text in the description field is read when a user selects 'Say Selection.  Other object properties may be edited by selecting the advanced tab.
    • Repair Text (no hot key): Checks the text of the current file and repairs errors. This is needed for SVG files made by converting PDF, Visio, and possibly other graphic files having embedded fonts.
    • Delete Object (Ctrl+Shift+Delete): Deletes the selected object.  NOTE: There is no undo button.  Please be sure you have selected the correct object before deleting. If you accidentally delete an object, do not save the file. Reload it. It should reload the file you were working on in the state it was in when last saved.
    • Convert to Overlay (Ctrl+Shift+O): Converts the selected object to an overlay object so that objects behind it may be seen through it.
    • Say Selection (Ctrl+D): Causes the IVEO application to read the title and description fields of the currently-selected object. When text is selected, this command causes the entire text object to be read.  Typically, text objects in graphics are a single word or group of words forming a label.  The object could be a line or even a full paragraph for standard text, so CTRL-b typically reads more than just the text that is selected.
    • Select Text (Ctrl+T): Allows the user to more easily locate text by increasing the pointer size to search for text only. After choosing this option, the user should touch near where the text is believed to be and continue touching until the program reads the text. The text is now selected.
    • Select Elements (Ctrl+E): Allows the user to select multiple elements at once.
    • Pickup Shape Style (no hot key): Imports the fill and line properties of the next object selected.
    • Find Element (F3): Assists the user in locating an element tactually.  A dialog box opens in which the user can select the element he or she wishes to find.  The user then presses anywhere on the Touchpad and the IVEO program directs the user which way to move his or her finger to reach the element.  When the user has touched the element, the IVEO program states that the element has been found.

    C.   Add Menu

    • Text (Ctrl+Shift+T): Switches to add text mode. Adds text objects one at a time until the space bar is pressed.
    • Rectangle (Ctrl+Shift+R): Switches to rectangle mode. Allows the user to add any number of rectangles as separate objects. The rectangles are outlines only.  Rectangle mode continues until the space bar is pressed.
    • Oval (Ctrl+Shift+C): Switches to oval mode. Adds ovals, one at a time, which become separate objects. The ovals are outlines only; pressing inside an oval will not make the program speak. Oval mode can be ended by pressing space.
    • Polyline (Ctrl+Shift+P): Switches to polyline mode. Allows the user to draw freeform lines which then become separate objects. Polyline mode continues until the space bar is pressed. Among other uses, the polyline option may be used for adding signatures to documents to be printed.
    • Filled Polyline (Ctrl+Shift+L): Switches to filled polyline (or filled freeform shape) mode. Filled polyline mode can be ended by pressing the space bar.
    • Image (Ctrl+Shift+I): Allows the user to add an image to a file.
    • Selection Mode (Space): Brings the user out of Add Menu modes and allows the user to once again select objects to hear them read.
    • Move Selected Objects:  Allows the user to click on an object and move the object to a new location.  To move several objects at the same time, click on the first object, hold down the Control (Ctrl) key and click on any additional objects.  All the objects should have a box around them and may be moved.
    • Rotate Selected Objects:  Allows the user to click on an object and rotate it.
    • Scale Selected Objects:  Allows the user to click on an object and change the size.  Drag the corner to maintain the same shape.  To enlarge one dimension, use one of the points on the side of the object and drag the side until the object is the desired size.

    D.   View Menu

    • Fit to Window (Ctrl+Page Up): Places the full figure in its original size along the left edge of the window.
    • Fit Selection to Window (Ctrl+Shift+Page Up): Fits the outer dimensions of the selected object to the outer dimensions of the screen so that either the length or width of the selected object matches the corresponding dimension of the window.
    • Zoom Rectangle (Shift+Page Up): Allows the user to select two points diagonal from each other, defining a rectangle. The rectangle will then behave as an object selected for the 'Fit Selection to Window' command.  When accessibility mode is used, users are asked to confirm points with the spacebar.
    • Zoom In (Page Up): Increases the size of the image so that more detail can be viewed.
    • Zoom Out (Page Down): Decreases the size of the image.

III. Turning Off a Screen Reader While Using IVEO Creator

    A.   Introduction

If you regularly use a screen reader, you may wish to turn it off or set it to sleep mode when using the self-voicing IVEO Creator or Viewer program. Below are instructions on how to do that for several screen readers.  You should also open the Preferences item in the file menu to be sure that the Windows File Dialog mode is selected, the Fixed Screen Mode is selected, the Accessibility Mode is checked, and the Speak Print Dialog option is unchecked.  The latter is voiced by screen readers, so it should not also be self-voiced.  The Tool bar option in the Show menu should also be unselected.

    B.   Setting JAWS Screen Reader to sleep mode

Start Jaws for Windows if it is not already running. Then start IVEO Creator and turn off its speech by pressing Crtl+Alt+S. Press Jaws key-6 to start the Jaws for Windows configuration manager. If you get a screen asking questions about Windows classes, tab to the cancel button and press Enter.

Press Alt+S to go to the Configuration Manager Set-options menu. Arrow up to the "Advanced Options" menu item and press Enter. The first item in the Advanced Options page is "Sleep Options Enabled". Check this box by pressing the space bar.

Tab to the next item in Advanced Options. If the "Sleep Options Enable" box is checked, the next item in newer versions of JFW is "Sleep Mode Unload Synthesizer". If this is the second item, then check this box also by pressing the space bar. Older versions of JFW do not have this second box and do not need anything more checked to work with self-voicing programs. Tab to the "OK" button and press Enter.

Press Ctrl+S to bring up the "Save" dialogue box. Jaws will automatically enter a name for the file. Unless it is default.jcf, it is recommended that you leave the name Jaws gives it. If Jaws enters the name default.jcf, type a different name you would like for the configuration file. Tab to OK and press enter.

Return to IVEO Creator or Viewer and turn its self-voicing speech back on by pressing Ctrl+Alt+S.

    C.   Turning HAL off while in IVEO Creator

Press Ctrl+O to turn off speech. When you are ready to turn it back on; press Ctrl+O again.

    D.   Turning SUPERNOVA off while in IVEO Creator

Press Ctrl+O to turn off speech. When you are ready to turn it back on; press Ctrl+O again.

    E.   Setting WINDOW-EYES to sleep mode while in IVEO Creator

Start Window-Eyes if it is not already running. Then start IVEO Creator or Viewer. Press Ctrl+ to access the Window-Eyes Voice Control Panel. Press Alt to open the Voice Control Panel menus. Press Enter or the down arrow to enter the Voice Control Panel File menu. The first item is "Open". Press O or Enter on this item.

The first item in the open submenu is "Set files". Press S or Enter to open this item. You are now asked for the name of the set file to open. Type silent.000 in the edit box. Alternatively you may tab to the combo box that is next and arrow to find silent.000 in the Window-Eyes files list. Tab to 'OK' and press Enter. You have now loaded a set file that will put Window-Eyes to sleep in IVEO Creator if saved.

You are still in the Window-Eyes Voice Control Panel. Press Alt+F to enter the File menu again. Press S or arrow down to "Save" and press Enter. Again select and open the "Set files" option. Window-Eyes will give a default name for the new set file, but we suggest that you change it to IVEO.000 or any other unused name with extension .000. Tab to 'OK' and press Enter. Window-Eyes will now ask if you want the new set file to be associated with your IVEO application. Press Enter to select 'Yes'.  Whenever the IVEO application is started or entered from now on, Window-Eyes will go to sleep.

IV. Viewing Features of IVEO and Creator

    A.   Introduction

The installation and calibration of the IVEO Touchpad, if needed by the user, must be completed before starting to use the IVEO Creator or Viewer.  See the Touchpad manual.

If you would like to turn the speech off or on, or modify the voice, you may do so from the Speech menu.  Pressing Ctrl+Alt+S or choosing Toggle Speech from the Speech menu turns speech on if it is off and vice versa.  If you would like the voice to sound different, you can change speech options using the Speech Settings option in the Speech menu (which can be accessed using Ctrl+Shift+S). Using the Speech Settings command will bring up a dialog box in which you can select a different voice from a list, change the rate of speech and change the pitch of speech.  Use the test button to find out how the options you've chosen will sound.

    B.   Opening a file

To open a file, press Ctrl+O or select and click the Open menu item in the File menu.  Focus is in the "file name" text field.  Enter the list of files in the current directory by clicking on a file with the mouse or by pressing Shift+Tab.  Browse to the directory containing the file you want. To get to the previous folder menu, use the combo box at the top of the dialog box if using the mouse or press Backspace. To open a folder, select and click the desired folder name. When you have browsed to it, select the file you wish to open, and then click OK. You may open files from Windows Explorer.  Clicking on the file or selecting Open in the context menu opens the file in IVEO Creator {unless the Viewer has been installed after Creator, in which case by default the file opens in the Viewer.  Selecting Edit in the Context menu or in the Windows Explorer file menu opens the file in IVEO Creator.  Reach the context menu by right-clicking the mouse or by pressing the Context key on the keyboard.

    C.   Printing or embossing a file

Press Ctrl+P or select and click the Print menu item in the File menu.  If the printer displayed is not the one you want to use, select the desired printer in the printer list.  It will remain selected until changed or the computer is turned off.  Change any desired options and then press ok.  If the 'Print Frame' option is selected in the Page Setup, ViewPlus embossers will include the tactile bar code at the top (or right side if in portrait mode) and an index number and title along the left side.   These are embossed in US computer Braille.   If the Print dialog items are being spoken by IVEO and a screen reader, unselect "Read Print Dialog" in the Preferences item of the file menu.

    D.   Exploring a Map

IVEO Creator or Viewer can be used to view graphics with audio feedback. In this tutorial you will learn to read a map in audio.  Instructions include creation and use of a tactile map and use of the IVEO Touchpad for users who need these.
    1. Open the IVEO Creator or Viewer program.  If speech is on, it will say "Welcome to IVEO" when loading is complete.
    1. Open the USAMap.svg file contained in the C:Program FilesViewPlussamples folder or the C:Program FilesViewPlusIVEOCreatorsamples folder.  When the file is opened, the program will say, "Document loaded title USA map" if speech is on.
    1. For users who need tactile copy, the map must either already be available as a tactile copy or it must be embossed on a ViewPlus embosser.  If you wish to emboss it, check the page setup parameters, then print to a ViewPlus embosser.  Go to the 'Page Setup' item in the File menu.  8.5 x 11 or A4 Braille paper is recommended.  Set the paper size, make sure that landscape mode is selected, and set the margins to whatever you find most comfortable.  The left margin should be at least 0.75 inches, and the top margin at least 0.5 inches.  Minimum right and bottom margins of 0.25 inches are recommended.  Be sure that the 'Print Frame' option is selected, that the paper size is set correctly in the printer properties and that the ViewPlus embosser is on with the correct paper loaded.  Then print to that ViewPlus embosser.
    1. Calibrate your embossed printout to the screen if the screen display has not already been calibrated.   Clamp the map you just embossed onto the IVEO Touchpad with the Braille index and figure title under the clamp on the left side and the tactile barcode dots at the top of the Touchpad.
    1. Explore the map using the mouse, the stylus of a Tablet PC, a touch screen monitor, or by pressing objects of the tactile printout on an IVEO Touchpad.  Any action equivalent to a mouse-down will select text or an object and, if speech is on, cause the text or the title of the object to be spoken.  On touch screens or Touchpads, only one point should be pressed at a time.  The IVEO application will read the titles for each state on the USA map as they are selected.
    1. Use the zoom functions to get a closer look.
Some of the states, especially in the Northeast, are small. In the printout of the entire country on one page, it can be difficult to tell where one state ends and the next begins. You can get a closer look in several ways.
Zoom in on a particular state
First, you can zoom in on a particular state. Touch the state on the Touchpad to select it. When the program reads the state's name, the state is selected. To zoom in on that state, press Alt+V to open the View menu. Select the menu item 'Fit selection to window'.  This will expand the state to the point that it fills the entire screen. To examine this zoomed in view of the state with the Touchpad, print it, remove the copy of the full USA map from the Touchpad and replace it with the new print out.  It is often useful to zoom out one or two steps with Page Down before printing to reduce the size of the object a bit in order to include portions of all the states around it.
Zoom in on a particular region
If you want to get closer up but want to include a number of states, you can zoom in on a rectangular area you specify. To do this, press Shift+Page Up or enter the View menu and select the 'Zoom rectangle' item. The IVEO application will say "Select corners of rectangle to zoom in." Select two corners of the rectangle, diagonal from each other. For example, choose the top right corner of the print rectangle at the top of Maine and then press somewhere inside Tennessee. This will provide a larger, easier to explore map of the Northeast. Now you can emboss the zoomed in view of the region and explore it on the Touchpad just like you did with the entire map before.  In accessibility view, users will be asked to confirm selections with the spacebar.
    1. Use the pan commands to perfect the examination area.
If you've zoomed in on an area, but you decide you'd like to view the states above, below or to the sides of it, simply use the 'Pan Up', 'Pan Down', 'Pan Left' or 'Pan Right' commands in the View menu or their hot keys (Ctrl+arrow in the direction of the pan). Choosing 'Pan Up' will move the entire picture up on the screen (and therefore show more of the states below the area you were looking at). The other Pan commands work similarly.  The relative size of the zoom or pan steps is user-definable in the Preferences item in the file menu.
    1. Return the view to the original view.
If you've zoomed in, but now you want to work with the entire map again, it's easy to return to the original view. Press Ctrl+Page Up or open the View menu, then select the 'Fit to window' menu item. This will return the file to the way it was when you opened it.
    1. Switch between print outs.
If you've returned to the entire map view, but you want to take another look at one of the close up maps you embossed, just reopen the zoomed in view.  You can also reopen the full USA map at a later time when some other file may be loaded.  Place the printout you want to examine on your Touchpad. Press Ctrl+B or select the 'Open from barcode' item in the File menu and press Enter. The IVEO program will say "Touch first barcode point." The three barcode points are the three embossed dots located along the top edge of the print out above the image. Touch the one farthest to the left. IVEO will prompt you to "Press space to confirm." If you touched the correct spot, press the space bar to move on to the next point. IVEO will then say "Touch second barcode point." Touch the middle barcode point and then the space bar to confirm it as prompted. The program will say "Touch third barcode point." Touch the barcode dot farthest to the right and press the space bar to confirm it. The program will say "barcode reading finished" and the view of your print out will automatically load in the Creator.
If IVEO does not recognize the barcode, it will say "No data found for this barcode."  This may be because the Touchpad read a touch as a barcode point you didn't intend. Try opening from the barcode again.  Alternatively the "Open from Index" item may be used to open the file for an existing printout.  Recalling the file and zoom parameters is possible only if the printout has been made on the computer where it is viewed or if the bar code library is transferred along with the SVG file from computer to computer.
    1. Open a new file.
You don't need to close the file you're using to open a new file, but only one file can be open at a time. When you open a new file, the program will automatically close the old one for you. If you are using Creator and have made changes to a file other than changing the view, you will be reminded to save your file.  You will lose changes if you do not save the file before opening a new one. You can not save different views of a file, but you do not need to if you keep the printed copies of the views because you can recall the views directly from the printouts.  The program will save any changes you've made in the original view.
    1. Close IVEO.
When you've finished using IVEO, you can close it by selecting 'Exit' in the File menu or by pressing Alt+F4.
Note: We have pointed out only a few of the hot keys such as Ctrl+B for bar code and Alt+F4 for exit. Most menu items have shortcut keys that you can learn from the "IVEO Creator Command Overview".

    V. Using IVEO Creator

    A.   Creating a SVG File from Windows applications

Creator users can print to IVEO Converter to create a SVG file from any Windows application.  This is the recommended procedure even for applications such as Visio, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, etc. that can export as SVG.  SVG files in general can have problems with sizing, text, and object structure that are minimized by IVEO Converter.  One simply clicks on print, selects the IVEO Converter (which is installed during Creator installation), and prints.  A dialog box will permit users to select the name and location of the output.

The output will be a file _index.html and a file folder called _index_files.  Here is the name given to the output when printing to IVEO Converter.  A SVG file for each page printed is contained in the file folder and is called xxx.svg where xxx is the page number.  A single page document will be 001.svg.  This structure is convenient for creating web documents with multiple page SVG documents.  Users who don't need to use this capability may delete the html file, move the SVG files out of that folder and delete the folder if desired.  Files may be renamed of course, e.g. by deleting the 001 from single-page SVG files.

The SVG file will be exactly what would be printed on a standard printer, including margins.  Consequently it will sometimes be desirable to change the page layout so images fill the entire page.  When opened in IVEO Creator, or later in the IVEO Viewer, the SVG image will be expanded or contracted to optimally fill the frame on screen.  Extra white space is normally undesirable.  However one can select the part of the image that is desired and click on "Fit Selection to Window" in the View menu.  Blind users can do this by making a copy of the original and then selecting "Zoom rectangle" in the View menu, and then selecting opposite corners of the image.  Once this maximized image has been printed, it can be recalled later by its tactile bar code or index.

Text is generally reproduced very well if created in most Windows applications.  However if text is present as bit-map images, the text will be images in the SVG document and will not be read as text.  Images containing bit-mapped text should be selected, copied to some graphics authoring program, saved as a png or tif file, and then imported into IVEO Creator.  When bit maps are imported, text is automatically subjected to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) and is usually accurately converted to "real" SVG text.  Windows Paint, the utility that comes as part of Windows, can be used to capture an image saved to the clipboard.  Paint then permits exporting the image in a number of formats.

PDF documents can be converted to SVG, but users should be warned that PDF files may need some special attention.  Many PDF documents are images with no real text.  They may be saved from Acrobat as a png or tiff file and those bit map files imported into Creator.  The text will then be OCR'ed.  Many PDF files having good text embed the fonts and use the internal coding to identify the characters.  When IVEO Converter is used to convert such files, the text will read nonsensically in IVEO Creator or Viewer.  However such mis-identification can be repaired with the Repair Text menu item in the Creator Edit menu.  Some other graphic authoring applications also convert with occasional incorrectly-identified text.  These errors can also be repaired with the Repair Text Creator function.

    B.   Importing a scanned image

To import from a scanner, the user should be sure that the scanner is properly installed, place the desired document on the scanner (best results are obtained when the document is oriented correctly), then select and click on the Scan menu item in the IVEO Creator file menu.  The user is then led through the standard options of the particular scanner, and then the document is scanned into Creator.  After scanning is complete, Creator will announce that OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is in progress.  The time needed for the OCR process depends on the speed of the user's computer but is typically a few seconds.  Text recognition is generally excellent for standard documents scanned at a resolution of 400 dpi or more.  200 dpi is the minimum recommended for OCR.  Accuracy is reduced if characters are very small, if the copy is not sharp (e.g. FAX copies and poorly photocopied materials), if foreign or scientific characters are present, or if fancy formatting, multicolors, etc. are present as text or background to text.  Text that has been incorrectly identified can be edited following procedures described in Section D below.

    C.   Importing a bit map image

Several standard bit-map formats may be imported into IVEO Creator.  Click the Import menu item in the file menu and select the file to be imported.  JPG, PNG, TIFF images may be imported, but GIF images are not accepted due to proprietary claims on this format.  However one may convert GIF files to other formats using Windows Paint.  PNG is recommended.

The bit map files are automatically OCR'ed and imported into an SVG file.  In order to keep the size of the SVG file as small as feasible, the bit map file is referenced and used when displaying in IVEO Creator or Viewer.  Consequently the bit map image should always be moved along with the SVG file if the file is moved.

Most bit map files made by scanning or copying within Windows applications are likely to import well, but many web bit maps may not.  Web authors commonly reduce the file size of images for efficiency, and these can give quite strange results when imported and OCR'ed.  It is common to give very small "thumbnail images" intended mostly as a link to something more interesting.  These small files seldom import well, so users are encouraged to find larger, better resolution images.

    D.   Editing Text

The Repair Text item in the edit menu can only correct the character code of characters, not the screen image of the character.  If OCR mistakes have been made, the screen image shows the character that the OCR engine has selected to represent the original image, and Repair Text can have no effect.  Consequently one must Edit Text if an OCR error has been made.  One should also edit text if a word is broken into two or more text spans instead of being (and reading as) a single word when selected.

When one selects a text object, one may open the Edit Text dialog with ALT ENTER or by clicking the Edit Object item in the Edit menu.  A list of words in that text object is given on screen along with several buttons.  One may arrow up and down the text word list until one finds the word to be edited.  Select it with ALT ENTER or by double-clicking the mouse.  Edit, then click OK or press ENTER to accept the edited word or click cancel or press ESC to cancel editing without making any change.  One edits split words by expanding one part to the full word and deleting the other.  Delete a word by editing it and deleting the characters with DEL or BACKSPACE.

Click the Advanced button to edit other properties such as position, font, etc.  The full SVG text parameters may be edited by people who understand how to use this powerful editing capability.

    E.   Using The IVEO Creator Author/Editor Commands

    1. Getting Started: Open your SVG file.
Open IVEO Creator. To create a new, blank file, press Ctrl+N or select "New" in the file menu.  To open an existing file, select 'Open' from the File menu or press Ctrl+O.  Browse to the desired file and open it as described in the tutorial.
    1. To edit the file using the IVEO Touchpad, emboss a tactile copy as described in the tutorial, place on the IVEO Touchpad, and select objects or text by pressing on them.  Sighted users can select objects on screen with a mouse or with the stylus of a Tablet PC.
    1. To give an object a title and/or description, select the object and then choose Edit Object from the Edit menu or press Alt+Enter. A dialog box will appear into which one can type the title and the description of the object.  The IVEO Creator or Viewer will speak the title when speech is on and a user selects the object.  The description is spoken if a user selects the object and then presses Ctrl+D or activates 'Say Selection' in the Edit menu.  Tab to the OK button and press the space bar or Alt+O to accept the changes and close the dialog box.
Sometimes objects are difficult to select because of their small size or unmarked location. One can easily select and edit all objects using the elements list.  Display by pressing Shift+E or by selecting the 'Elements List' item in the Show menu. At the bottom of the elements list, there is an Edit button that will bring up the same dialog box that the Edit Object command brings up. Click this button or press Alt+E after selecting the object to be edited.  After editing all desired objects, close the elements list with Alt+C or by clicking the 'Close" button.
Sighted users who find that there are many objects in an area that should have the same name and don't want to go through and give them all titles can use the Filled Polyline command from the Add menu. Just draw a line around the area desired for selection. Press space to get out of Filled Polyline mode, then select the filled polyline and choose 'Convert to Overlay' from the Edit menu. To label all the objects under the overlay, use the Edit Object command just as for any other object. Adding a filled polyline and converting it to an overlay also works great for labeling areas that may have been blank space on the original SVG file (like large bodies of water on a map) and are not really objects.
Note: All objects on top of other objects cover the objects beneath them, even though these objects may still be visible depending on the fill properties of the object(s) on top. This means that if there is a labeled area in a region on which an overlay filled polyline is to be drawn, it may be necessary to draw a new, small overlay filled polyline over the central area on top of the larger one.
Sighted users can also use IVEO Creator to add other objects to files. Available under the Add menu are commands that allow the user to enter modes to add text (press Ctrl+Shift+T), rectangles (press Ctrl+Shift+R), ovals (press Ctrl+Shift+C), polylines or free form lines (press Ctrl+Shift+P), filled polylines or freeform shapes (press Ctrl+Shift+F), and images (Ctrl+Shift+I). Press the space bar to get out of the Add mode when no more objects of that type need to be added.
When editing of the file is finished, don't forget to save it. The program will prompt the user to save the file before closing if changes have been made to the file. The save process can be activated using the current file name and location by pressing Ctrl+S or choosing Save from the File menu. To save the file under a different name and/or in a different location, press Ctrl+A or choose Save As from the File menu to open up a Save As dialog box.
    Tips and Tricks
Some objects may have voiced feedback even if they haven't been given titles. When this occurs, what is spoken is generally an ID number or default name given to the object by the program that originally created it. If any of the objects in the file have names that weren't added by the user, chances are that all of the objects will have identifying names like this. To get rid of them, edit each object using the Edit Object command and type the desired title in the title field; or if no title is desired, simply enter a space into the title field to prevent the object from speaking at all.
